What to consider when buying Solar Panels and Thermal Heating in Shrewsbury
Solar energy water heating systems, or ‘solar thermal’ systems, make use of free heat coming from the sun’s raw heat to warm residential hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heating unit can be used to make the water hotter, as well as to supply hot water when solar power is not available.
The benefits of solar water heating
Hot water throughout the year. The system operates all year round, although you’ll need to heat up the water even more with a boiler or immersion heater during the course of the winter months.
Decreased utility bills. Sun light is free, therefore once you’ve invested in the upfront installation your hot water costs will be cut down on.
Lower carbon footprint. Solar energy hot water is a green, sustainable heating system and could reduce your carbon dioxide emissions.
Just how do solar energy water heating systems work?
Solar energy water heating systems use solar panels, called collectors, installed to your roof. All of these collect heat energy coming from the sun and use it to warm up water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. A central heating boiler or immersion heater can be used as a backup to heat up the water further in order to achieve the temperature you want.
There are two types of solar water home heating panels:
1. Evacuated tubes
2. Flat plate collectors, which can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof.
More substantial solar panels can easily also be arranged to offer some contribution to warming up your home at the same time. However, the quantity of heat energy offered is typically very small and it is not normally considered beneficial.
Is solar water heating ideal for your home?
Factors to take into consideration
Do you have a sunny place to put solar panels? You’ll need around five square metres of roof space which faces East to West through South and receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day. The panels don’t have to be mounted on a roof however. They can be fixed to a frame on a flat roof or hang from a wall.
Do you have space for a larger, or an extra, hot water cylinder? If a dedicated solar cylinder is not already installed then you will usually need to replace the existing cylinder, or add a dedicated cylinder with a solar heating coil.
Is your current boiler compatible with solar water heating? Most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating. If your boiler is a combination boiler (combi) and you don’t currently have a hot water tank, a solar hot water system may not be compatible.
Solar Heating Maintenance
Servicing charges for solar water heating systems are typically very low. Almost all solar water heating systems we fit arrive with a five-year or ten-year manufacturer’s warranty and call for little maintenance. Once fitted we will leave written details of any maintenance inspections that you can carry out from time to time to ensure everything is functioning effectively.
The system also includes a pump, usually these will last around 10 years and we will always check them.
